Stoffelsma family in 1980 Greenhouses in 1981 Nathaniel Stoffelsma

HISTORY
The Nursery’s history began with the purchase in 1979 by Hans and Susan Stoffelsma of a five acre piece of land which was to become their home and place of work. Their two children, Nathaniel and Sarah, grew up while living at the nursery.

The construction of their first greenhouse was completed in 1980 and the start of their first seedling crop began in the spring of 1981

Before 1980, all reforestation stock for B.C. was produced by BC Government’s Forest Service Nurseries. This all changed when government policies allowed privately owned nurseries to bid on some of BC's reforestation needs. Since that time most BCFS nurseries closed down and currently all reforestation needs are met by privately run nurseries.

Arbutus Grove Nursery ltd, was one of the first few privately owned operations to supply the forest industry with planting stock in B.C..”We have come a long way since our first contract to produce 250,000 Western Hemlock seedlings for BCFP back in 1981."

We produce mainly coastal species and our Douglas Fir seedlings continuously outperform our competitors stock when it comes to vigor, overall plant health including healthy roots, and high survival rates.

We are proud to be a family operation which includes our staff of which some have been with us for decades. Their dedication and commitment is the force behind our success.

In 2003 Nathaniel Stoffelsma became involved in the nursery and since has played an important, leading role in the management of the operation and the marketing of our products and services.

In Oct. 2004, Arbutus Grove Nursery Ltd. became the first tree seedling producing operation to be registered under the ISO 9001;2000.Quality Management System. This is another of our commitments to strive for excellence in our service to our customers.

We produce approx. 10 million seedlings for customers throughout the Pacific North West on our 20 acre site on Vancouver Island.
